A memorial hair brooch with black enamel and pearls.  The engraving on the back of the brooch makes it a very interesting pin.



Metal:  Tested 14 karat yellow gold.  Please note on the back side of the pin in one of the corners is a circular discoloration.  I do not know where, how or what caused the discoloration and am too apprehensive to try to either buff it off or polish it off as I do not want to cause damage to the front of the brooch. Also on the back of the pin is a pendant accouterment that folds up and down with a gold jump ring.

Gemstones:  Twenty two round pearls with an AVERAGE diameter of approximately 2.50mm each.  The pearls have a grayish body color with a silver overtone.

Enamel:  The enamel that accents the hair is black and is in good condition.  There is some wear but seen best under 10x magnification.  

Hair:  The brown hair is not braided or swirled....basically just placed in the hair compartment.

Engraving: The engraving on the back of the pin is a bit difficult to decipher. From what I can make out it says:  "Anna Cartwright ??? 5, Dec. 1827 ??? 42."  The question marks are where I cannot make out what the engraving says.  We did some investigating and here is what the engraving MIGHT be referencing:

Security:  The pin is secured by a "C" catch.
